THE NATIONAL TRIBUTE SESSION ORGANISED IN HONOUR OF FIDEL CASTRO BY THE NLC AND THE TUC NIGERIA

THE NATIONAL TRIBUTE SESSION ORGANISED IN HONOUR OF FIDEL CASTRO BY THE NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS AND THE TRADE UNION CONGRESS OF NIGERIA AT THE PASCHAL BAFYAU LABOUR HOUSE, ABUJA, HEADQUARTERS OF NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS ON THURSDAY, 8TH DECEMBER 2016 Protocols On behalf of the National Executive Council of Nigeria Labour Congress and indeed, all Nigerian workers, we welcome everyone here as we assemble to honour one of the world’s most efficient, courageous, defiant, purposeful and well respected leaders who fought for not just his country but people across the globe, especially poor countries that are groaning under the excruciating pangs of oppression and exploitation. The man we are assembled here to honour did not only liberate his country and people from backwardness and economic hardships, he indeed gave dignity to humanity by providing a leading example of good governance and respect for humanity. The man, Fidel Castro Ruz, a revered revolutionary par excellence; exceptional humanist; committed social changer; political gladiator of popular purpose; and indeed an unforgettable friend of Africa who contributed immensely to the independence struggles of most African countries. No matter what side of the ideological divide anyone belongs, no one can deny the fact that Fidel ran his country from grass to grace, providing quality education, health care, housing and and all other basic needs for his people; extending access to qualitative education and health care to citizens of other countries, also including Nigeria, despite a global conspiracy that has isolated his country from global trade till date.

Even his enemies recognise the fact that he provided good governance for his people, despite low resources of economic values. He managed to provide quality life for his people without borrowing money from external sources; without renouncing his ideological beliefs by approaching neo liberal institutions for policies that would have clearly derailed his mission and purpose; indeed, without compromising the ideological threshold of his country’s success. Fidel was indeed, a towering, fearless political leader whose ideas and actions built a followership of significant substance across the world. Fidel proved to the world that even with very little resources, a good leader can successfully resist the intimidation of the richest country in the world. This can only be possible with a leader who had the entire people with him because he succeeded in not just palliating their pains but removing such pains without blinking. Through him, Cuba extended assistance to liberation groups across the world, especially countries under all sorts of oppression groaning in severe contraptions of countries that depend on exploiting other countries to develop theirs. His country, under him, supported the anti apartheid struggle in South Africa. He supported struggles for independence in Nigeria, Ghana, Angola, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Namibia, to name just a few. Cuba supported Ethiopians against unnecessary attacks from Somalia. Cuba under his leadership did not stop supporting these countries even after their various struggles but continued in rebuilding their societies especially through medical and educational training assistance

Many Nigerian doctors received their training in Cuba. Not a few received and are still receiving medical treatment in Cuba. Indeed, Fidel, the son of a sugarcane farmer, born on August 13, 1926 was a rare gift to humanity, spending most of his life organising for a change that has impacted positively in the lives of not just Cubans but citizens of other countries in South America and Africa in particular. He knew his purpose in life early enough and pursued this with vigour and commitment; uncommon till date. He started organising while in school as a student activist, bringing students together to discuss political issues that culminated in the transformation of Cuba as the first Communist state in the western hemisphere, after the painstaking overthrow of an anti people dictator, General Fulgencio Batista. And since then, Cuba has been a country that has transformed not just the Cuban society positively but changed the thinking and direction of global politics

Although, the United States still feels bitter about the nationalisation of her business interests in Cuba since 1960, the recent renewal of diplomatic ties is a development that has been applauded by other countries and peoples, this would not be complete if the trade and economic embargo is not lifted as the world moves closer to being tolerant and safer.
