‘Why Buhari declined assent to Maritime University bill’

President Muhammadu Buhari has declined his assent to the establishment of the Nigerian Maritime University.

Buhari, in a letter dated 25th of May and addressed to the Speaker of the House, conveyed his decision not to sign the bill into law and the reasons behind it.

One of the reasons, he said was the funding provisions, which he said are grossly excessive.

He also said such funding will disrupt the operation of a number of government agencies and institutions.”

Similarly, the lawmakers kicked against Executive Order revoking gun permit, asking President Buhari to rescind the Executive order revoking all licensed weapon.

The decision followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance by Nnenna Elendu (PDP, Abia) stated that while the president derives the power to issue Executive Order from section 33(2) of the Constitution, the Order violates Section 44(1) of the constitution.
