2019 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
As the global community commemorates the International Women’s Day today, the Nigeria Labour Congress felicitates with the Working Women in particular and all women as it is a day we must all appreciate the contributions of women in not just our struggles but in all spheres of the life of every country as nation builders.
In the labour movement, working women have been playing critical roles in all our struggles and have practically deepened the purpose of gender mainstreaming by standing up to defend the rights of working women and taking up positions not just in their unions but also in the leadership of various global union federations.
We salute the courage and determination of Women in the Labour movement for the promotion and defense of the right of women workers.
The International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8 in recognition of the social, cultural and political achievements of women, especially their brave contributions to our collective struggles for equity, social justice and good governance.
The 2019 theme which is “Balance for Better”, is a build up to the previous themes towards gender parity and a better balanced World; this will also bring about economic growth, inclusiveness, progress and development.
Women need to be celebrated as they are vital to the development of the family, community and society. Indeed, they deserve special recognition in every society across the world.
The NLC is determined to support its Women Commission on gender issues especially the Campaign for the adoption of the International Labour Organisation’s Convention on Violence and Harassment Against Women and Men in the World of Work. Violence and sexual harassment in whatever guise or form violates the fundamental rights of the victims; constitutes obstacle to the achievement of equality, development and decent work. Decent work is about job security in the workplace, social protection, freedom for people to express their concerns, equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men including protection from harassment and gender based violence at work.
Happy International Women’s Day!!!
